We are all different. I have been taking photographs of dead trees, disused petrol pumps and tumbled-down sheds for some years. I get very excited on finding a new specimen to document and have been known to travel many miles to capture a wonderful example. I can only provide a rationale answer for the pumps. The other two collections have as yet a more hazy role – a more innate ‘knowing’ that I need them for my work. Over the years the collections are building with little exposure to strangers eyes – but here’s a glimpse inside…
I came across Dick’s website by accident – he collects old petrol pumps. http://www.pumaperiodpumps.com/phdi/p1.nsf/supppages/puma?opendocument&part=2
Gorgeous images Jac, as ever very thought provoking. I too am attracted to the discarded, disused, abandoned and wondering if that is a universal human response and if so what is it about? Does it happen as we get older and feel the days charging by and feel our own mortality looming, or is it always with us? I’m interested to know what feelings such objects arouse in you, are they the same as mine? A curiosity about their history, who created, built (and what of their lives), a deep sadness for something gone, but also through this a sense of connectedness with the past and the future (who will find, handle and wonder about my life, through objects, diary’s, musings that I leave behind?)
Would be interested to hear if others connect in the same, or different ways.
Thanks
Jane
